The Book Blogger Hop/Book Beginnings/ The Friday 56 4/28/2017

This week, I started participating in something new, The Book Blogger Hop.  It is hosted by Ramblings of A Coffee-Addicted Writer.and more info can be found here. Essentially a book-related question is posted each Friday

Friday 56 is hosted at Freda's Voice and Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader. The idea is to share a sentence or so from the first page and the 56th page of the book you are currently reading!  Also, I will now also include a brief synopsis.

This week's Book Blogger Hop's question.
How many books have you re-read? If you have re-read books, please tell us the book's title and why you re-read it.

Other than the children's books that I've read to my son, I don't really re-read books.  I did last year re-read a book that I had originally read back in the 90s, but that was mainly because the author, Rosanne Bittner in the last few years decided to make a series out of
her original book, Outlaw Hearts and I wanted to re-read it, since it had been so long since I had read it that I assumed I would have forgotten some of the details.  I am considering sometime in the future re-reading the Little House series, since one, that's probably one of the books/book series that really made me love reading and two, I know I never ended up reading all of them, but I'm not quite sure, where I left off

I'm still reading the same book I mentioned in last week's  Book Beginnings and Friday 56, so this week I'll highlight the book that I just mentioned above.

Outlaw Hearts (Outlaw Hearts, #1)

A Brief Synopsis:  A decades long love story of two people, united by chance, that proves love's lasting power and its ability to overcome all oddsMiranda Hayes has lost everything-her family, her husband, her home. Orphaned and then widowed, desperate to find a safe haven, she sets out to cross a savage land alone...until chance brings her face-to-face with notorious gunslinger Jake Harkner.

Hunted by the law and haunted by a brutal past, Jake has spent a lifetime fighting for everything he has. He's never known a moment's kindness...until fate brings him to the one woman willing to reach past his harsh exterior to the man inside. He would die for her. He would kill for her. He will do whatever it takes to keep her his.

Spanning the dazzling West with its blazing deserts and booming gold towns, Jake and Miranda must struggle to endure every hardship that threatens to tear them apart. But the love of an outlaw comes with a price...and even their passion may not burn bright enough to conquer the coming darkness.

Beginning of the Book

April 1866
Miranda tried to ignore her father still-fresh grave as she flicked the reins and goaded the drafty horses into a slightly faster gait.  This was not a time to crumble.  She had to face facts.  Her father was dead and her worthless brother was somewhere in Nevada, totally oblivious to the hardships his father and sister had faced these last months.

Page 56

After all, it was a Mexican name, and Jake Harkner most certainly had some kind of Spanish or Indian blood in him.  Still, he surely wouldn't call his mother by her first name.  Was she a woman he had loved?  Was Jake Harkner capable of caring for someone that much.

Top Ten Things That Will Make Me Instantly NOT Want To Read A Book

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme/original feature created at The Broke and The Bookish this weeks list are Top Ten Things That Will Make Me Instantly NOT Want To Read A Book .  For more information check it out here.

1.  Dystopian/Post-Apocalyptic  - I have never cared for these even back in high school.  Could not stand Lord of the Rings, The Time Machine or even Brave New World.  I tried reading Divergent, but unlike the required reading in high school , I ended up DNF'ing this.

2.  Science Fiction - Never liked science fiction as far back as I can remember.  I can remember watching the original Star Trek series, only because we only had one tv for awhile growing up in the 70s.  Now, the Jetsons, I could watch,  but forget about any of the Star Treks, Star Wars or most any other movie that is categorized as sci-fi.  Therefore I don't like reading sci-fi either.

3.  A book being compared to Gone Girl or Girl on the Train  I didn't like either of these books and I actually never should have read Girl on the Train, since it was compared to Gone Girl and I disliked that one!

4.  Graphic Novels - These really haven't done much for me and since I enjoy good character, as well as plot development, I really don't see me enjoying graphic novels in the future.

5.  Erotica - Regular romance novels can be descriptive enough at times, plus erotic novels usually are not very developed on plot.  I want a good story with romantic elements and not just sex.

6.  Zombies, Vampires, and Werewolves - These elements just don't interest me in the least. Never watched Buffy, The Vampire Slayer and do not watch The Walking Dead.

7.  Steampunk - Not positive what exactly steampunks includes, but it doesn't interest me from what I've heard.

8.  Poetry - Nursery rhymes or Dr. Seuss to read children or other children's books with rhyming lines are fine, but I can't just sit down and read poetry for the sake of it.

9.  Horror - At one time, I enjoyed Dean Koontz and read a little of John Saul, I think,  I have several books on my Kindle by Lisa Jackson in her New Orleans series, but I'm really not in the mood to read it anymore,  Never could get into Stephen King, either.  I was never a big horror movie fan, other than Nightmare on Elm Street movies when I was a teen and young adult.

10.  Animal cruelty.  The book, Wild portrayed an incident of animal cruelty and that among other things in the book made me greatly dislike the book.  It really was unnecessary for her to include it in the book anyway..

11.  Christian fiction that comes across too preachy.  I enjoy some Christian fiction, but there are some authors that just come across a way too preachy.

What about you?  What turns you off of a book.

The Forever Summer

A Brief Synopsis:  The discovery of long-buried secrets brings three generations of women together to Cape Cod for the summer homecoming of a lifetime.

Blog Tour: Forbidden Kisses by Annie Rains

Forbidden Kisses (Blushing Bay, #1)

Summary:

For years, Jack Sawyer’s family has been running their upscale seafood business like a finely tuned machine. But every machine breaks down eventually, and suddenly Jack needs a new office manager, a new kayak launch, and a new lease on life. Then Grace Donner shows up again. She’s smart, motivated, and perfect for the manager position, but if she’s anything like her mom, she can’t be trusted. And Jack has never been able to trust himself around Grace.
Grace hasn’t seen her former stepbrothers since their parents’ messy divorce, but she never forgot them—especially Jack. She misses being part of the big rambunctious Sawyer clan, and if there’s an opportunity to set things right, she means to do it. But she can’t ignore Jack’s irresistibly kissable lips, or the searing way he looks at her when he thinks she’s not looking. Their chemistry is more explosive than ever. And if the Sawyers can forgive and forget, anything is possible.

Excerpt:
Jack reached for a folded blanket beside the cooler and laid it down on the open floor of the
boat. “I know it’s not the most comfortable surface for lying back, but I thought we could look at
the stars. It’s a favorite pastime of fishermen, you know.”
“Oh yeah?”
He reached for her hand to help her lower to the floor. She held on to his tightly, surprised at
how off balanced she felt. Then they lay back together, close enough that they touched. The
soft hair on Jack’s arm resting against hers aroused her senses.
Were they really just going to look at the stars?
Yes, it was all very romantic, but so was doing other things under the stars. Things she’d been
thinking about since stepping aboard.
Jack pointed up at the sky and started to speak. Grace was tired of talking, though. Tired of
resisting what she wanted, and right now all she wanted was Jack.
Unable to help herself, uninhibited by the wine and the romantic environment, she rolled on top
of him and crushed her mouth over his.
Judging by the stiff protrusion that met her inner thigh, he wanted her just as much.
“Well, hello there,” he said, smiling against her mouth.
“I’m sorry,” she said, even though she didn’t mean it.
His hand slid down her back and settled on her bottom, pulling her snug against him. “I’m not.
I’d decided tonight was for romance only, but I can’t think of anything more romantic than
making love to you on this boat.”
White-hot heat tore through her. She was so hot that maybe it was time to start stripping.
As if reading her mind, Jack tugged the hem of her shirt up on her back and then over her head.
The rest of her clothes fell away in the wake of his needy hands until she was tipsy and naked
on the floor of his pontoon boat—on a boat ride to nowhere in particular, except his body was
promising to shoot her to the low-hanging full moon.

I really liked this author's first series, Hero's Welcome and have been looking forward to her new series, Blushing Bay.  Fans of Annie Rains will not be disappointed.  Although this may not have been my favorite of her books, it is a good story and I look eagerly to hearing the stories of the other Sawyer siblings in the future.

March Wrap-Up (Better Late Than Never)

Reading this month has been a real mixed bag..  My first book that I read entirely in the month, I really enjoyed, but most of the others were sadly lacking something.

Pachinko, I read mostly in February, but finished in the first few days of March.

Pachinko by Min Jin Lee

I originally got this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The book was published earlier last month and I borrowed the audio version to listen to instead. As many have said Part 1 is excellent and Part 2 is good, but Part 3 is where the book really went downhill for me. Also, way too many characters are introduced and keeping track of the characters is extremely difficult. Their was an excessive amount of swearing, which was not always necessary. At times, yes, but at other times it was not necessary to the story. Also, I felt there was more sex in the story than necessary and that some of the sexual scenes were placed in there just because the author felt there should be LGBQTIA issues included in the story. Some of it came out of nowhere and was not needed to further story. All in all, I was disappointed by the book and although on Goodreads, I gave this a 2.0, it really deserves more of a 1.5 to 1.75 star rating.

The Polygamist's Daughter by Anna LeBaron

I enjoyed this book that I received as an ARC from the publisher through NetGalley. Anna LeBaron endured a lot and was a very brave woman/girl. She was able to do at 13 what many who are older and stuck in that or a similar cult couldn't do. Although it is hard to believe someone who came from such an existence was able to end up living such a relatively normal life later on, it shows that with the right support system that one can get through a lot. I have been under the weather lately and do not think that I am writing very good reviews at the moment, but hop[e to be back to writing well thought out reviews soon. I did enjoy this and recommend this book, especially if you enjoy books about women who escape polygamous cults.

4 stars

Black Stars of the Civil Rights Movement

It's surprising how little of this history was taught back in the eighties; even in my college years during the late eighties. I found this book in our children's library, but other than the names of Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks, many of the names were either unknown or just merely recognized by name and not by their accomplishments.  This may be marketed as a children's book, but I found this rather interesting and hope that many, if not all of these fampus African-Americans are talked about in history/social studies class/

3 stars

The Innocent (Will Robie, #1)

While listening to this on audio, I Kept finding myself thinking that this would truly make a really good movie, maybe starring Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt. The audio version was really well done in that they included sound effects of gunshots and explosions that really enhanced one's enjoyment in listening. The story did get somewhat confusing at times, but overall was enjoyable and fast-moving. This audiobook might be very good for a long roadtrip, although not for young children. Although, I don't think there was bad language in here for the most part, it might be better for teenagers or even just adults.

3 stars

The Roanoke Girls

I had hoped that waiting a few days, I would be better able to decide on a rating for this book, as well as a review for it, but I'm still undecided for the most part on whether to give it 1 or 2 stars. Although I did not really enjoy the story, I did continue on to the end because I wanted to know what happened and the book is actually well written. It is the author's 1st adult novel , but she has written at least two young adult novels, previously, of which I have not read as the subject matter didn't interest me. But this book is definitely an entirely different genre from her previous books.

There is a family secret that is disclosed very early on in the story and therefore mentioning it is not a spoiler and can actually be beneficial for those who do not for whatever reason want to read about (view spoiler). Therefore although not graphic, it is an uncomfortable book to read. Even the two main characters in the story, Lane and Allegra, two of the "Roanoke girls" are not truly likable characters. This book is definitely not for everyone, but if you read and enjoyed Flowers in the Attic, you may like this one, Although I enjoyed that one a lot, at least back then I did , how I would feel about it now I don't know. and this one not all that much.

2 stars

The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane

This is my most highly anticipated book of 2017. In fact, I've been anticipating this book since shortly after Lisa See's last book, China Girls came out in 2014. To say , it was a disappointment is kind of an understatement. I have 3 of the 4 Lisa See books that I read and the adoption angle in this book really had me intrigued, but unfortunately even the adoption story was not enough to win me over on this one. This story went too into the technical aspects of tea production and just did not hold my interest in that regard. Whenever the story seemed to start getting good, Ms. See started back on the technical and historical aspects of tea. The historical aspects of tea in China and among the minority group, the Akhas, would have been fine and it is evident that much research was done, but every aspect of tea making that was learned did not have to be explained to us. Ms. See's stories are well loved for their historical storytelling and character development. I felt the although the characters were pretty well-developed and most of the storytelling was well done, it could have been so much better. The ending seemed rushed, like the length of the story was realized and an ending was quickly written. I don't want to get into the ending anymore, because I don't want to spoil the story. Although, I am glad to have read the story, I just find there to be something lacking from this story, but I do look forward to Lisa See's next book.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me a ARC.

3 stars

Child of the Civil Rights Movement (Junior Library Guild Selection)

This is a very short, but good book of just under 50 pages and perfect for children in grades 3- 6 or so. The author's parents were very involved with the civil rights movement and knew Martin Luther King, Jr. personally.

3 stars

Somebody's Baby (Darling, VT #3)

I really, really liked this book. It was just what I needed after reading quite a few average books This is the third book in the Darling, Vermont series, but the first one I've read, Oaklee Ferguson and Rory Gallagher have known each other ever since Rory and Oaklee's brother were friends back in school. In high school, Oaklee had a huge crush on her brother's best-looking friend, but Rory, several years older, just thought of her as his friend's kid sister, back then. They both went away to college and recently she returned to her hometown to work as the town's social media guru, while Rory has been working as a veterinarian at the town's veterinary clinic. They've both loved and been burned and of course, neither are even looking for love in the least. As they say, that is when it most likely happens, You know when you have a veterinarian in the story, he's going to be a great guy and of course, there is a dog in their that Oaklee fosters until they find him a permanent home. This is the makings of a great story. Stories with dogs usually are winners in my book and this one is no exception. This book is just under 300 pages and is a pretty quick read, This is a sweet romance that I thoroughly enjoyed and that I whole-heartedly recommend.

4 stars

This month was such a mix of books based on my enjoyment of them.  I'd easily say the least favorite book that I read this month was Pachinko.  The last section of the book really did it for me.  As for my favorite book, that's a bit harder, nothing totally stands out, but I'd say The Polygamist's Daughter kept me reading and was the book I liked best during this month.

Book Beginnings.The Friday 56 4/14/2017

Friday 56 is hosted at Freda's Voice and Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader. The idea is to share a sentence or so from the first page and the 56th page of the book you are currently reading!  Also, I will now also include a brief synopsis.

Forbidden Kisses (Blushing Bay, #1)

The Synopsis:  The USA Today bestselling author of the Hero’s Welcome series introduces a trio of swoon-worthy North Carolina brothers fighting for love in this novel of sand, sea, and seduction.

But she can’t ignore Jack’s irresistibly kissable lips, or the searing way he looks at her when he thinks she’s not looking. Their chemistry is more explosive than ever. And if the Sawyers can forgive and forget, anything is possible.

Beginning of the Book

Grace Donner felt strangely out of place as she walked into the Blushing Bay Café with her decade-old laptop and ordered a coffee and blueberry muffin.

56%

"Oh," Grace wondered if it had anything to do with the woman  she'd seen Noah with the other night.

Since I am participating in the author's blog tour for her new series (I'm scheduled for April 20th) I'll be posting a review, excerpt, etc., so check back  at my blog next Thursday.

What do you think?  I loved the author's first series and couldn't wait when I heard she had a new series coming out.  Hope to see you at the blog tour on my blog on the 20th.  What are you reading?

  • What are you currently reading?

  • What do you think you’ll read next?
So let's get onto it!

What are you currently reading?  I am just finishing up The Enchantress Returns (The Land of Stories #2) by Chris Colfer.  This was a 500+ page book, which is why it took me over a week and a half.  I have about 70 pages.  If I don't finish this tonight, I probably will on my morning commute.  I'm also listening to Hummingbird Lake by Emily March, #2 in the Eternity Springs series.

What did you recently finish reading?  I essentially finished, all but the last 2 hours of The Girl in the Garden by Parnaz Foroutan,  I really disliked the book and the next day, I could not get myself to complete the last 2 hours.  There really was not anything that would have made me improve my rating on it at this point.  I also finished today listening to The Secret Sister by Brenda Novak.  The ending was not what I had thought it would be and it really increased my enjoyment of it.  I had not planned to continue with the series, but with the ending and all, I plan to get the next book.

What do you think you’ll read next? I 'll be reading the ARC of Forbidden Kisses by Annie Rains, in which I'm part of the blog tour on April 20th,  I've really enjoyed her previous books and am looking forward to her new series.  Luckily, the book is a somewhat short at just over 230 pages, so I should be able to finish it in plenty of time.

What about you?  Have you read any of these or do you plan to? What are you reading?

What do you think you’ll read next? My next audiobook will be The Girl from the Garden by Pamaz Faroutan or else The Silent Sister by Brenda Novak.  I'll be reading my current read at least through this upcoming weekend, since it is over 500 pages, but hopefully by next Wednesday, I'll be able to complete it.  But then, I'll be reading an ARC of Forbidden Kisses by Annie Rains, which I signed up for a blog tour and will be posting my review and an excerpt on April 20th.
