The Book Blogger Hop is hosted by Ramblings of A Coffee-Addicted Writer, Friday 56 is hosted at Freda's Voice and Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader. The idea is to share a sentence or so from the first page and the 56th page of the book you are currently reading! Also, I will now also include a brief synopsis.
This week's Book Blogger Hop's question.
Do your bookshelves have books ONLY or do you also have bookish items on the shelves?
A Brief Synopsis: The Curies' newly discovered element of radium makes gleaming headlines across the nation as the fresh face of beauty, and wonder drug of the medical community. From body lotion to tonic water, the popular new element shines bright in the otherwise dark years of the First World War.
Meanwhile, hundreds of girls toil amidst the glowing dust of the radium-dial factories. The glittering chemical covers their bodies from head to toe; they light up the night like industrious fireflies. With such a coveted job, these "shining girls" are the luckiest alive — until they begin to fall mysteriously ill.
But the factories that once offered golden opportunities are now ignoring all claims of the gruesome side effects, and the women's cries of corruption. And as the fatal poison of the radium takes hold, the brave shining girls find themselves embroiled in one of the biggest scandals of America's early 20th century, and in a groundbreaking battle for workers' rights that will echo for centuries to come.
Written with a sparkling voice and breakneck pace, The Radium Girls fully illuminates the inspiring young women exposed to the "wonder" substance of radium, and their awe-inspiring strength in the face of almost impossible circumstances. Their courage and tenacity led to life-changing regulations, research into nuclear bombing, and ultimately saved hundreds of thousands of lives.

Beginning of the Book
Dear Readers,
When you are entrusted to tell someone else's true story - whether as an author, actor or director - I believe you have a responsibility: to do justice to whose story it is. That's how I approached the true tale of the radium girls from the very first moment I discovered it.

It was the "lip, dip, paint routine" all over again, but with an all new cast.
I think I'll have to try this one! Thanks for sharing. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm really enjoying this; although it is a serious topic. It is very well researched and well-written. Hoping to finish this one tomorrow.
DeleteThis sounds like my kind of book. I've actually heard of the radium girls before and always wanted to read more about their story. Thanks for mentioning the book. I'm going to add this one to my goodreads TBR.
ReplyDeleteMy bookshelves are 95% books (because I only have two units) but then 5% stuff from bookish subscription boxes and my funko shelf guardians.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds exactly my kind of book! It's going straight on my TBR :)

(I'm having trouble leaving messages on blogger today...)
The other week I was having trouble leaving a link on wordpress, I think. Probably a computer burp or something!
DeleteRadium girls looks like an amazing book. I'm impressed you've relegated your books to the basement. I have a couple of bookcases, which I use to display art and keepsakes, too.
ReplyDeleteThe main reason the books are in the basement is mainly I read on my kindle and it's in the finished part of the basement.
DeleteI have so many books on my kindle too! I also can relate to having a lot of my books in storage. One day it will be nice to have rooms filled with bookshelves :). Awesome answer!

I've been eyeing this book....I hope you enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing, and for visiting my blog.
My shelves have books, photos, and figurines from my Fairy Tale collection.
This definitely looks and sounds like something I want to read!
ReplyDeleteI sadly don't have any bookshelves anymore. They broke in my move so my books are just in 2 giant Uhaul boxes which makes it hard to think I have hardcopies. So I just end up reading on eReaders.

The Radium Girls looks great! It's been on my TBR for awhile and I'm hoping to get to it soon. My shelves are mostly books right now but I'm hoping to add some bookshelves so I can indulge a bit more in all the bookish stuff!
ReplyDeleteThe Radium Girls just came out in May. I think there may be another book with a similar name about this. The one I'm reading is by Kate Moore.
DeleteDespite most of my books being on kindle now I still have all the books from pre-kindle, plus a good few that I just HAD to have on paper after reading them on my kindle, lol.
ReplyDeleteI have a bunch of ebooks too! It was one of my 2017 goals to read through them all...but I have yet to start! I've been too caught up with Honest Reviews and new releases.
ReplyDeleteHere's my response to this week's hop question
My bookshelves are also in my basement. And I never go down there so they're in a sorry state. I keep a lot of books in my room that are essentially a big old to read pile.
ReplyDeleteSounds like one heck of a read! :-) Happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a powerful read...Thanks for sharing! Putting this on my TBR list!

My Blog Hop Answer
Yes, since I have 51 pages of books on my kindle, that's over 400! I could NOT fit those on my bookshelves... I've recently had a clear out of some that can go (mainly to do with my former career, no longer relevant), which makes it look like there are some gaps... but I have books waiting to find permanent shelf places as well :)

I've heard the story of this, of course. I'm sure it would be an interesting read.
ReplyDeleteSounds like an amazing read! I hadn't heard of this book before so thanks for sharing!
